The wonderful world of vaping throws us many an abbreviated word with quite a few of them being associated with coil types and variations.

Do you know your BVC from your VM1?

.. That’s surely a topic for discussion in a future blog, so remember to check back regularly.

Today let’s take a look at a couple of other abbreviations.

Mouth to lung (MTL) and Direct To Lung (DTL) vaping styles.

They’re known as styles because of the way in which the resulting vapour reaches your lungs.

From personal experience it must have been around six years ago these vaping styles really took a foot hold within our Industry. I can remember popping into my local vape shop with the owner taking me to one side.

“Take a look at the back of this box, Neil. It says mouth to lung and direct to lung.” He looked at me in a quizzical manner. “Aren’t they the same thing?”..

I must admit it had me stumped too, but they’re not and the differences are blatantly obvious when taking into account the habits of a smoker.

Mouth To Lung Vaping

The newbie will undoubtedly be needing this style of vaping and may very well have no idea of the concept of direct to lung hits or in fact even care.

This style of vaping perfectly mimics that of a smoker.

As I just mentioned, if we stop to think of a smokers habits we can easily see the appeal and one of the reasons why vaping has become so popular over the last decade.

Smokers tend to rely on short, quick drags that first enter the mouth before being inhaled into the lungs. The technique remains the same with MTL vaping except the pull or the draw is slightly longer in order to maximise flavour production.

The resulting exhale of vapour also replicates that found from a cigarette.

An MTL device is still very useful for the experienced vaper because the vapour output can be very discreet and stealth like while still providing a satisfying experience.

MTL Equipment

The good news is that this style of vaping can be relatively cheap with devices such as the Innokin Endura T20 S Kit even offering spare coils inside the box. The recent upswing in Pod based systems such as the Voopoo Vinci Mod Pod Kit are more than capable of delivering a very effective MTL vape.

It’s still possible to use box mods with MTL tanks but the general rule is that they are significantly less powerful when it comes to output. 15-20W is commonly associated with this style. Adjust to a suitable wattage on devices such as the OBS Cube X Mod and you’ll be good to go!

This lower power consumption also means the battery (often internal) will last much longer and in some cases under average use, continue to function up to three days between charging.

Because MTL vaping relies on a much tighter draw, the cotton around the prebuilt coils will be packed much tighter to restrict airflow further. 510 drip tips also play a key role with restricting airflow from within the chimney of the tank.

Types Of E Liquid

MTL vapers should always opt for vape juice with higher PG levels. We’ve mentioned the low level of power required from the devices themselves. This reduction also means that the coils will find it much more difficult to deal with the thicker consistency found in VG. This often leads to a “dry hit” where the juice is unable to keep up with the demands of the heated coil.

As well as being thinner, it’s important to note that PG is the carrying agent for the flavour in E Liquid. Being able to wick efficiently allows for a controlled, longer draw to the vape while offering all the nuances from the juice profile itself.

Nicotine is not heated as quickly from an MTL device so the good news is those cravings can be dealt with across multiple nicotine levels. Although the throat hit from 18mg freebase can still be harsh, the advent of smoother nicotine saltresolves the issue.

The amount of juice consumed is a lot less when using an MTL and the average vaper may find a 10ml bottle lasting for anything up to 3-4 days. It makes this style of vaping very cost effective. The demands of the coils are also much less so expect a prebuilt type to last anything up to 2-3 weeks depending on the choice of juice.

..I would always recommend an MTL device to a new vaper. It’s by far the best way to quit the dreaded cancer sticks and even more fun witnessing them make the transition to DTL vaping.

Because by then they’ve successfully quit smoking. How cool is that?

We arrived in Dubai to attend the vape show. The vibe was epic, we got chance to catch up with everyone whom we've only ever spoken to virtually (thanks to Covid) but none the less, we thoroughly enjoyed chatting to everyone and checking out the stands and other products.

Some more good news for us vapers!

In a new trial designed to help people quit smoking, patients in A&E - whatever they are being treated for - will be offered a free device and taught how to use them. They will also be supplied with enough e-liquid to last a week.
